I’ve recently come to very-much-admire the illustrator Rilla Alexander. She’s worked on several beautiful letterpress projects with Studio on Fire, a savvy letterpress and design studio in Minneapolis. Rilla designed this lovely image for Studio on Fire’s 2008 calendar. I love the print’s characters, and the fluid solid secondary color really makes them pop. This distinct coloring technique looks great in letterpress, but Rilla’s used it effectively in a number of other illustrations and paintings (for instance, these wood panel paintings). Really charming :)

Sweet little die-cut letterpress card by Egg Press out of Portland, Oregon. I was lucky enough to meet one of Egg’s printers at the National Stationery Show earlier this week. I have to say, they’re one of my new favorite presses! Really quirky and beautiful stationery; super nice people.

Broadside by Bieler Press and Gerald Lange, the authority on printing digital type and using photopolymer plates on letterpress machines. Bieler describes this print as an example of a large solid area being printed well (an often difficult and unpredictable task when printing letterpress). The broadside is “printed with Charbonnel ink with Setswell Compound additive. Printed by Robin Price under the direction of Gerald Lange at the USC Fine Arts Press. Illustration is a replication of a linoleum engraving by Henri Matisse originally cut for Martin Fabiani’s edition of Henri de Montherlant’s Pasiphae. Set in Ludwig & Mayer’s Domino and printed on Magnani Incisioni White mouldmade paper. Printed on a Vandercook Universal I.”
